These new dihydropyridines correspond to the general formula 1: <IMAGE> where R = carboxyl, lower alkyl or phenyl optionally substituted by one or more radicals such as hydroxyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halo; R1 = H or optionally substituted lower alkyl, phenyl or heterocyclic group, the substituents of the lower alkyl being chosen from the phenyl or heterocyclic radicals and the substituents of the phenyl or heterocyclic group being chosen from the hydroxyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halo radicals; R2 = H or lower alkyl, as well as the alkali metal, alkaline-earth metal or amine salts of general formula 1 where R1 = H. The process for their preparation consists in reacting an aldehyde, aqueous ammonia and an alphaketocarboxylic acid in order to obtain the corresponding product which is optionally acidified in order to obtain a 1,4-dihydropyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid which is converted to a salt or an ester in its turn. The 1,4-dihydropyridines are used in the preparation of the corresponding pyridines.
