Aralkyl hydroperoxides are produced by the oxidation of an aralkyl hydrocarbon of the type <FORM:0713138/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R2 are the same or different alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl and saturated radicles, in which Ar may be substituted by alkoxy, by the known use of gases containing oxygen, on the liquid hydrocarbon, in presence of a secondary or tertiary amine, preferably in the absence of catalysts. In examples, commercial cumene is oxidized in presence of pyridine to give good yields of hydroperoxide. Other amines stated to be useful include dimethylamine, piperidine, tetrahydroquinoline, and pyrrolidine, and alkylpyridines. Hydroperoxides obtainable by the process include various alkyl benzyl hydroperoxides, diphenylmethyl hydroperoxide, methylnaphthylmethylhydroperoxide, and a tetramethyl-p - xylylene - dihydroperoxide. Specification 663,445, [Group IV (a)], is referred to. |
