In the dyeing and printing of textile materials with vat, sulphur or sulphur carbazole dyestuffs, good penetration is obtained by employing a water-in-oil emulsion comprising an aqueous preparation of the dyestuff, 0.3-15 per cent by weight of a non-polymerizable, non-film-forming, non-hardening emulsifier and 5-25 per cent by weight of a volatile liquid hydrocarbon, the emulsion containing no film-forming, polymerizable or hardening agents. Specified emulsifiers are a polycondensation product of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide with an alcohol, alkyl phenol or fatty acid, as described in Specifications 340,431, 380,851 and 404,931; or a fatty ester of a polyfunctional alcohol; or a sulphonated petroleum product; or a sulphonation product of a naphthenic acid; or an amide of a fatty acid such as oleylamide. Aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbons such as white spirit, light gasoline, car gasoline, gasoline oil, toluene and xylene may be employed. Polyvalent alcohols such as glycerine may also be incorporated in the emulsion. The dyestuffs are vatted, steamed and oxidized on the material, and the vatting agent may be added to the emulsion. Fabrics may be printed on both sides with emulsions containing different dyestuffs. Examples are given. Specification 647,098 also is referred to. |
