A magnetic probe (10) for detecting the location of a magnetic anomaly. The probe includes an outer dewar jacket (11) that defines a chamber (20) maintained at cryogenic temperatures by a helium reservoir (22). Mounted on the reservoir in the chamber is a substrate (32) which supports a plurality of pairs of gradiometer coils (31) and a magnetometer (30). A plurality of SQUIDs (34) detect the magnetic fields sensed by the magnetometer (30) and the pairs of gradiometer coils (31) to determine the magnetic field intensities, directions and gradients from which can be determined location, speed and direction of the anomaly. A valving network (Fig. 5A) connecting the reservoir (22) to a vent (26) allows the probe (10) to be operated in any orientation around its horizontal axis.
|
