A protective fence with barb elements preventing anyone from climbing over is used to protect secure areas. Said barb elements are formed from angular individual elements with barbs on the end which are fitted together, preferably welded together, to produce a self-supporting welded lattice construction. In this arrangement, the individual elements can be designed so as to be U-shaped, at an acute angle or bent-off in a U-shape and connected to one another by longitudinal wires such that continuous supports are obtained. These supports, to be used as barb elements, can be fitted without further measures being taken, in particular without being braced, on top of the fence. <IMAGE>
