A currency note dispenser (12) includes a housing (134, 144) having first and second delivery areas at which there are openings (140, 142) via which a stack of notes (94) may be delivered to an operator. A carriage (98) moves the stack of notes to a selected delivery area, and a sensor (116) causes solenoid means (118, 120) to be energized, thereby bringing about movement apart of associated doors (22, 24) and rollers (130, 132) so as to permit the stack to project through the associated opening (140). The solenoid means (118, 120) are then de-energized, permitting the doors (22, 24) and rollers (130, 132) to be urged together by spring means (124, 128), and causing the stack to be gripped by the rollers. With the stack thus gripped, the carriage (98) can be moved back to its home position. The rollers (130, 132) are respectively associated with one-way clutches which permit the stack (94) to be pulled out of the dispenser (12) in an unimpeded manner in rolling contact with the rollers (130, 132).
