The invention relates to a cutting machine for stem and residual timber for the direct production of splinter-free chip material with a low proportion of fine material. The cutting is effected inside a cutter rotor which is fitted with an interchangeable cutter ring and which can be moved together with its housing in a reciprocating manner in front of the orifice of a wood-feed channel provided with pressure elements. Located in the interior of the cutter ring is a compression chamber in which the timber to be cut abuts in sections against an abutment. In order to hold the pieces of timber immovably in position in a chatter-free manner, the compression chamber is provided with additional pressure elements acting transversely to the abutment, a fixed, slightly elevated entry threshold being arranged directly in front of the compression chamber. In order to prevent residual sections from getting into positions which are unfavourable for cutting, an axially displaceable baffle plate is provided in the compression chamber, and the pivot axes of the pressure elements are arranged in such a way that their pressure movement deviates only slightly from the cutter pitch circle.
