A process is described for the catalytic dehydration of methanol and/or dimethyl ether at temperatures of above about 300 DEG C. At least a part of the heat liberated in the reaction is removed by a coolant which is passed through the pipes 6 embedded in the catalyst packing 4. The coolant used is water which is heated and partially evaporated at a pressure above 100 bar or steam which is superheated. <IMAGE>
