N-hydroxyethylated macrocyclic polyamines of the formula in which X is O or N(CH2CH2OH), and each of Y<1> and Y<2>, wich are equal or different, are with the proviso that X is different from N(CH2CH2OH) when both Y<1> and Y<2> are -CH2-CH2. The use thereof as cation-complexing agents. Process for preparing N-hydroxyethylated macrocyclic amines by extracting the non-hydroxyethylated polyamine with an organic solvent from a salt-containing aqueous solution, and reacting the polyamine with ethylene oxide.
