To form a worm (2) in a method for the production of a simplified worm gear mechanism (1), a coil of round wire (3) is arranged and secured on a cylindrical body (4) in accordance with the tooth pitch of an associated worm wheel (5) and in accordance with the desired worm pitch. The worm wheel (5) is constructed as an output pinion and, in particular, consists of a commercially available roller chain wheel with a welded-on hollow axial shaft. The mounting of the coil of round wire on the cylindrical body (4) is effected by shrinking on or by adhesive bonding, soldering or welding. The simplified worm gear mechanism is characterised by a minimum outlay in terms of material and manufacturing costs and is especially suitable for manual load-lifting devices such as spare-wheel lifting jacks and the like, where high quality toothing is not particularly important. <IMAGE>
