In the case of a method for starting and shutting down a railway converter which is used for energy exchange between a three-phase network and a single-phase railway network and consists of a single-phase synchronous machine, a three-phase shaft generator, an excitation converter and an asynchronous machine which is supplied in a duplicated manner and has a direct converter which can be connected on the rotor side, the object exists of synchronising the railway converter to the two networks without any transient oscillations, and of reducing the apparatus complexity. This is achieved in that the asynchronous machine (1) is short-circuited on the stator side, in that the single-phase synchronous machine (6) is accelerated in the lower speed range with the asynchronous machine (1), which is supplied from the direct converter (4), up to a speed at which the torque which can be emitted by the single-phase synchronous machine (6) is greater than that of the asynchronous machine (1), and the direct converter (4) is then disconnected from the rotor windings of the asynchronous machine (I, II, u1...w2) by means of switches (S21, S211, S22, S221), and is coupled to the stator winding (61) of the synchronous machine (6) by means of further switches (S71, S711, S72, S721), and in that the asynchronous machine is accelerated up to the rated speed with the synchronous machine, which is supplied via the direct converter. <IMAGE>
