Buffer solutions containing as cations: hydrogen, sodium and/or potassium ions and as anions hydroxide ions as well as certain inorganic and organic acid ions with hydrogen concentration in the pH range of 5-8 and a tonicity corresponding to a 0.7 to 1.4 % strength sodium chloride solution are suitable as compositions for lowering the intraocular pressure.
