Preparation in the liquid phase of 2H-2-oxazolines and 2-substituted 2-oxazolines using an inorganic zinc salt

2H-2-oxazolines are prepared by bringing into contact an N-(b-hydroxyalkyl)formamide in the liquid phase with a small but catalytic amount of an inorganic zinc salt at elevated temperatures. 2-Substituted 2-oxazolines are likewise prepared by bringing into contact N-(2-hydroxyalkyl)carboxamides with a small but catalytic amount of an inorganic zinc salt.
