PURPOSE:To obtain a coordinate input device which contains both a coordinate input function and a writing locus display function and unifying the input and the display, by providing a planar sensor finished to a mirror surface under a liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:A reflecting plate is provided on the rear side of a liquid crystal element at a display area 1, and a planar sensor 2 finished to a mirror surface is provided on the rear side of a writing area 1.2 respectively. The tip of the writing pen 3 contains a near infrared-ray emitting element having directivity. The timing with which the light is made incident from the liquid crystal element at a certain position of the tip of the pen 3 and a reflected output is obtained from the sensor 2 shows the position of the incident light. Then the position of the incident light on the entire surface of the liquid crystal is extracted by a position extracting part 5 from the block number obtained from said timing. A main control part 6 controls the liquid crystal element through a drive part 7 and with the timing of a command given from the part 5 and also controls the display of a writing locus based on the extracted position information. A display control part 8 controls the displays of the result of character recognition, the guidance warning to a writer, etc.
