Disposed between two base plates with control electrode is a cholesteric liquid crystal which exists in two optically different, stable structures and has a dielectrical anisotropy which is positive at low frequencies and negative at higher frequencies, as a result of which the liquid crystal assumes one of the two stable structures as a result of applying a low-frequency voltage and the other stable structure as a result of applying a higher-frequency voltage. The two optically different structures have long-term stability with no voltage applied. This makes energy-saving displays possible. <IMAGE> |
