PURPOSE:To carry out the partial nucleus hydrogenation of an aromatic hydrocarbon, economically on an industrial scale, in the presence of water, by using a catalyst comprising a ruthenium catalyst dispersed in an alumina gel derived from the hydrolyzed aluminum alkoxide. CONSTITUTION:Ruthenium catalyst dispersed in an alumina gel derived from the hydrolyzed aluminum alkoxide is used as a hydrogenation catalyst, and an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. is made to react with hydrogen in the presence of water and the above catalyst. The partial nucleus hydrogenation product of the raw material, e.g. cyclohexene, alkylcyclohexene, etc. can be produced economically on an industrial scale by this process. The above catalyst can be produced by taking advantage of the gelation property of the alkoxide; for example, by adding water to an organic solvent solution of a ruthenium compound and the above alkoxide derived from mono- or polyhydric alcohol, stirring the mixture under heating, and drying the produced gel with heat. |
