PURPOSE:An aromatic acid dianydride is vaporized in an argon atmosphere to form carbon fiber, then hydrocarbon is vaporized by heating to make the fiber thicker to effect stabilized formation of the titled uniform fiber of high tensile strength and high electroconductivity. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic acid dianydride such as pyromellitic acid dianhydride or a compound forming an aromatic acid dianhydride by heating is vaporized with heat in an atmosphere of argon, nitrogen, helium, hydrogen or their mixture or under vacuum to allow carbon fibers to grow on a ceramic base. Further, vapor-phase growth of carbon fiber is continued on the carbon fibers by vaporizing a hydrocarbon such as benzene in an inert gas atmosphere or under vacuum to make the fibers thicker whereby the objective fibers are obtained.
