A device for dispensing a controlled length of material (100) includes a track through which the material is lead from a source of supply (236) of the material to a location where the material is required. The track defines a space that provides a first surface whose length exceeds the length of a second surface located at the opposite and adjacent side of the track. The track defines other surfaces against which the material is clamped through operation of pneumatic pressure valves according to the control of a computer or other control device for actuating the valves. A source of pressurized gas is supplied to the inlet side of the valves and manifolds (212, 214, 216) communicate the outlet of the valve to portions of the track along which the material is led.
