A casing article including a tubular core member (116) and a length of shirred casing (118) engaged about the core. The article further includes means for releasably anchoring a trailing end (130) of the casing to the core so that movement of the trailing end can be taken as a true indication of the depletion of casing.

A method and sensor arrangement (134) for detecting depletion of the casing using the article are also disclosed.
