PURPOSE:To restrict, with good response, the occurrence of knocking in selectively using regular gasoline and premium gasoline by deciding whether basic ignition timing should be switched or not and making switching control to the ignition timing in accordance with the kind of gasoline. CONSTITUTION:When a pulse signal indicating the presence of knocking at a knocking discriminating part 2 is output from a knocking sensor 1, the ignition timing is controlled so as to be delayed by an ignition timing controlling device 7 which inputs delay angle control voltage from a delay angle controlling voltage generator 3, thereby readily restricting occurrence of knocking. On the other hand, said delay angle control voltage is input into each comparator 41 and 42 in a reference ignition timing switching deciding part 4. By means of AND gates 43 and 44, which obtain logical product of the outputs from said comparators 41 and 42 and the outputs from an operation range deciding device 45, the kind of gasoline to be used can be decided, taking into consideration the reference ignition timings for premium gasoline and regular gasoline, respectively. Then, according to this decision, ignition timing is subjected to switching control by means of a reference ignition timing switching means 6.
