The tape-recorder operating system has a simple reading head (11) which is upstream of the driving mechanism (12) in normal tape running and downstream of it when the tape runs in reverse. The driving mechanism doses the tape speed towards the reading head. A guide mechanism guides the tape in the horizontal plane and has devices placed on the side of the driving mechanism away from the reading head. In reverse running, the guide devices engage with the tape and vary the path of the tape. The tape is also guided in the vertical plane.
