A freely programmable device for determining the actual position of rotation and establishing the intended position of rotation of workpieces in combination with a programmable handling device or industrial robot with controlled axes. By means of a gripper, the workpiece is picked up at a controlled axis of rotation and held in the region of a fixedly mounted sensor. During the rotation of the workpiece, the desired features pass through the sensor region.
