PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound, economically, decreasing the steam consumption, improving the saponification yield, and reducing the size of the apparatus, by concentrating a dilute aqueous solution of olefin chlorohydrin with a reverse osmosis membrane to a specific concentration or above, and saponifying with milk of lime. CONSTITUTION:Chlorine is made to react with an olefin in water, and if necessary the existing acid is neutralized with an insoluble carbonate such as calcium carbonate. The obtained dilute aqueous solution of an olefin chlorohydrin 1 is concentrated to >=5wt% with a reverse osmosis membrane 2, and saponified 3 with milk of lime. An olefin oxide 7 can be produced economically in an industrial scale, remarkably decreasing the amount of waste liquid in addition to the above-mentioned merits. The concentration can be carried out only by pressurizing the liquid to be treated, without necessitating the addition of a coagulant nor the heating of the liquid. Accordingly, there is no contamination with impurities formed by the degradation or denaturation of the separated components, the transmitted liquid 5 can be reutilized, and the process is convenient for the energy saving and the operation in a closed system. |
