PURPOSE:To improve the inspection efficiency of pipes by moving a pipe group juxtaposed horizontally with plural pipes, inspecting successively the inside and outside surfaces of the pipes in the pipe group from the ends thereof, tracking the results of the inspections and sorting the pipes to nondefective and defective pipes in the pipe group within the moving route thereof. CONSTITUTION:The inspector inputs the number corresponding to the pipe having abnormality to a central processing unit 60 by a means 66 for inputting outside surface inspection when he finds the abnormality in, for example, an outside surface inspection part F in the above-mentioned inspection. The operator actuates a foot switch 63, upon ending of inspection of all the pipes, to transfer the pipes from a turning roller 42 by a hydraulic cylinder 44 to the roller conveyor in a sorting part G. The unit 60 sorts automatically the pipes by actuating a hydraulic cylinder 54 relating to a lifter 53 for conveying the nondefective pipes to lift the non-defective pipes and conveying the defective pipes toward the down stream accoreding to the results of screening the non-defective and defective pipes. The inspection efficiency of the pipes is improved by the above-mentioned method.
