PURPOSE:To maintain the comparatively high picture quality despite reduction of number of gradations and to attain transmission of moving pictures with a narrow band, by using a receiver having a display screen with reduction of its physical size. CONSTITUTION:For a transmission side device 10, the gradation information is reduced from the picture information fed through a TV camera 11 by a gradation information reducing part 12. The part 12 suppresses the gradation corresponding to the light intensity supplied through the camera 11 by 1-3 bits for each picture element. Then the picture informaton is coded by a coder 13 and stored to a frame memory 14. The contents of the memory 14 are transmitted to a reception side device 16 via transmission line 15 of a narrow band. The device 16 decodes the received picture information stored in a frame memory 17 by a decoder 18 and therefore restores the moving pictures. These restored pictures are delivered and displayed at a display part 19. In this example, the deterioration of mental satisfaction due to reduction of the gradation information can be compensated by reducing the physical size of the screen of a display part 19 of the device 16. |
