In an ionisation chamber, especially for the ionisation of gaseous oxygen, having a housing (1) with an inlet flow opening (2) and an outlet flow opening (3) for the medium to be ionised, especially oxygen, and having in each case one anode (5) and one cathode (6) arranged in the housing (1), a high ion concentration and/or charge-carrier concentration can be achieved in the medium flowing out and, in the case of oxygen as the medium, the formation of ozone can be prevented, by arranging the anode (5) and the cathode (6) running essentially transversely with respect to the flow direction of the medium, and one behind the other in the flow direction of the medium. In this case, the arrangement of the anode (5) behind the cathode (6) in the flow direction of the medium leads to positive ionisation of the medium flowing out.
