The necessary thermal binding apparatus (4), having a hot-plate (14) for melting the sheets (2) which are to be bound into a hot-melt adhesive (16), which is located in a folding spine (18) for receiving the leaves, and a cooling stand (6) for the temporary accommodation of the bound material in order to enable the heated hot-melt adhesive to cool are accommodated in a box (8). When a lid part (36) of the box (8) is swung open, the thermal binding apparatus (4) remains in the bottom part of the box, while the cooling stand together with the lid part is swung open. In the swung-open state, the cooling stand (6) simultaneously forms a retaining apparatus for the sheets (2) placed on the hot-plate (14). <IMAGE>
