PURPOSE:A fluorine-containing ammonium salt of Mo, W, Nb, Ta, V, Re and rare earth metals is thermally decomposed in a specific gas stream to give a variety of metal fluorides of high purity by no use of expensive starting materials. CONSTITUTION:The thermal decomposition of a fluorine-containing ammonium salt of Mo, W, Nb, Ta, V, Re, and rare earth metals such as La, Ce or Nd, for example, (NH4)2WF8 is pyrolyzed in an intert gas atmosphere of, e.g., nitrogen or in a reducing gas stream by heating at a certain temperature to give the objective metal fluorides of various kinds.
