An apparatus for determining the content of organic carbon in water comprises a device for dispensing carbon dioxide which has a steam generator (13) for converting the water sample, after oxidation of organic substances contained therein, into steam, a device (14) fitted on the steam generator (13) for introducing a carrier gas for the purpose of extracting CO2 formed by the oxidation of the organic substances, and a water separator (15) for separating CO2, and a device (16) for measuring the CO2 content. Using this apparatus, the organic carbon contained in the water can be determined to a high accuracy, even if the carbon content is extremely low. <IMAGE>
