Composite cutting tip for machining high-strength products and a method for its manufacture

The composite cutting tip according to the invention contains three layers, namely: a cutting layer, which consists of an extremely hard component, a carrier layer, which consists of a solderable metallic component, and an intermediate layer, which is arranged between them and consists of a mixture of the following components (in % by weight): 5 to 40 of the component contained in the composition of the cutting layer, 10 to 80 of the component contained in the composition of the carrier layer and as the remainder, up to 100 products of reaction between the said components. The cutting tips are produced by a method according to which the mixture for the cutting layer, consisting of an extremely hard component or of a component which can be converted into an extremely hard component, the mixture for the carrier layer, consisting of a solderable metallic component, and the mixture for the intermediate layer, which consists of 10 to 60% by weight of the mixture for the cutting layer and 90 to 40% by weight of the mixture for the carrier layer, are prepared: the said mixtures are introduced into a pressing mould in such a way that the intermediate layer comes to lie between the mixture for the cutting layer and the mixture for the carrier layer. The said mixture layers are compressed at a low pressure and the blank obtained is acted upon with a pressure of 40 to 150 kbar and a temperature of 1200 to 3500 K.
