PURPOSE:To inform an abnormality of a television receiver to the customer in an understandable way by detecting an abnormality state of the television receiver, generating a character pattern based on the detected output and displaying it on a cathode ray tube. CONSTITUTION:A switch circuit 8 is thrown normally to the position A, an AFC detection circuit 7 detects a drift of a tuner 1 and a drift of a tuning voltage and the drift is corrected by feeding back its output voltage (b) to the tuner 1. When the channel is switched, the switch circuit 8 is thrown to the position B so as to stop tentatively the AFC function. In this case, a state detection means 10 detects that the state of the switch circuit is in the preset state and it is informed to a character generator drive means 11. The character generator drive means 11 activates a character genertor 12, a prescribed character pattern stored in advance in the character pattern storage device 13 and displayed on a cathode ray tube 5.
