PURPOSE:To attain efficient compression by decoding a transmission picture data into a dot pattern, compressing one page of picture data in the main scanning direction and the broadwise scanning direction and transmitting the less compressed data to a central processing unit. CONSTITUTION:A picture data is transmitted from a facsimile equipment 4 to a central processing unit 1 via an exchange 3 and a facsimile controller 2 and stored in a memory. The picture data in this case is compressed by N lines' share in the unit of a line in the main scanning direction and the result is decoded into a dot pattern in a facsimile controller 2. Then the decoded dot pattern is compressed in the main scanning direction and the amount of the compressed data is counted and also compressed in the subscanning direction and the amount of the compressed data is counted similarly. Then the amount of compressed data in both the directions is compared and the less amount is transmitted to the central processing unit 1. Thus, the amount of data and the transfer time are saved between the central processing unit 1 and the facsimile controller 2.
