PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound continuously, in high yield, preventing the deposition of colored material to the wall of the light source side, without lowering the rate of reaction, by dispersing sodium sulfite in a saturated hydrocarbon, and carrying out the photo-sulfoxylation reaction in the absence of water. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by adding sodium sulfite to a saturated hydrocarbon (e.g. 8-24C n-paraffin), and reacting sulfur dioxide with oxygen under the radiation of light having a wavelength of <=500nm using a high-pressure mercury lamp or low-pressure mercury lamp, etc. essentially in the absence of water, at -20-+200 deg.C and 0-50atm. The amount of sodium sulfite is 0.1-10wt% based on the saturated hydrocarbon. USE:Useful as a raw material of an alkanesulfonic acid salt which is a surfactant for synthetic detergent, etc.
