PURPOSE:To guide an ink ribbon to a prescribed correct position by actuating an ink ribbon winding mechanism and providing tension to the ink ribbon at the time of color selection. CONSTITUTION:When a ribbon shift motor 25 is driven, a shift cam 24 fitted to the former rotates, resulting in the rocking of a shift arm 26 which slides on the shift cam 24 and the subsequent ascending and descending of a ribbon cartridge 9. Next, a CR motor 11 is switched ON at the time of completing color selection and the gear of an ink ribbon winding wheel train is disengaged by shifting a carriage 1 to the right by the same number of steps as shifted to the left earlier. After these procedures, again the CR motor 11 is switched ON to make the carriage 1 perform a fixed amount of reciprocal motion. In this way, the carriage 1 is caused to shift and subsequently actuate an ink ribbon winding mechanism. As a result, a color ink ribbon 8 is given tension this time, although it was not possible to do so because of a friction load between a printing head 6 and a ribbon mask 7 during the earlier color selection. The sag of an ink ribbon is eliminated as described above and a color belt is accurately guided to a prescribed position.
