PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the production of dyes, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., e.g. by reacting a phenolic compound with an amine and a cyclohexanone compound corresponding to the phenolic compound used in the reaction, in the presence of a hydrogen- transfer catalyst, under heating. CONSTITUTION:A diphenylamine compound is prepared by the thermal reaction of phenol or its nucleus-substituted derivative with an aniline compound or its nucleus-substituted derivative and a cyclohexanone corresponding to the phenol or its nucleus-substituted derivative used in the reaction, in the presence of a hydrogen-transfer catalyst (e.g. palladium). As an alternative method, in place of charging the cyclohexanone to the reaction system from the start of the reaction, the phenol is charged in excess to the system and converted partly to the corresponding cyclohexanone compound in an amine under hydrogen pressure, and the produced cyclohexanone compound is successively made to react with the phenol and amine to obtain the objective diphenylamine compound. The reaction temperature is 150-300 deg.C, preferably 170-280 deg.C. |
