A metal fluoride whose metal is Mo, W, Nb, Ta, V, Re, Ti, Zr, Hf, Co, Ni, Cr, Sb, Sn, Zn, Cd, Pb, Al or a rare earth element is produced by heating a fluorine-containing ammonium salt of the metal, to convert it into the metal fluoride.
