PURPOSE:The reaction of a glycidol with an aldehyde is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst in an aqueous solvent to enable the industrially advantageous production of the titled compound which is used in medicines and agricultural chemicals in high selectivity and high yield. CONSTITUTION:A glycidol of formula I (R<1>, R<2> are H, lower alkyl) such as glycidol or 1-methyldlycidol is allowed to react with an aldehyde such as forformaldehyde or acetaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst in an aqueous medium to give 1,3-dioxolan-4-yl carbinol of formula II (R<3> is H, lower alkyl). The acid catalyst is e.g. a mineral acid such as HCL or H2SO4 and a carboxylic acid such as acetic acid. In case that the reactant is hard soluble in water, the reaction is carried out using an auxiliary solvent such as metahnol. An example of the compounds of formula II is 1,3-dioxolan-4-yl carbinol.
