A circular knitting machine has specially designed sinkers for selectively forming small, medium and large stitch loops. Each sinker (8) includes a throat progressively increasing in height from the inner end of the sinker to the neb and defining low, middle and high knitting positions. In one type of sinker described, the throat is triple-stepped to include low, middle and high knitting faces (29,28,27). In another type of sinker described, the throat includes a tapered knitting face inclined upwardly from the inner end to the nob and defining at least low, middle and high knitting positions. Pattern wheels (14) are arranged to engage and selectively position the sinkers (8) in outermost, intermediate and innermost radial positions to form respective small, medium and large stitch loops.

|
