PURPOSE:To suppress the harmful side reactions in the production of an alcohol by hydrating an olefin in the presence of a ferrierite catalyst, and to elongate the life of the catalyst, by using a catalyst calcined at a specific temperature in the presence of steam. CONSTITUTION:A ferrierite calcined at 400-900 deg.C, preferably 600-800 deg.C for 0.5-24hr, preferably 2-10hr in the presence of steam, preferably a hydrogen ion-type ferrierite wherein at least a part of the cation is hydrogen ion, is used as the catalyst for the hydration of an olefin, preferably ethylene, propylene or butene. An alcohol can be produced by this process, suppressing the side reactions such as the polymerization and coking of the olefin, keeping the catalytic property stably for a long period, and maintaining long catalytic life. |
