PURPOSE:To improve wettability with carbon fibers and the mechanical strength of a fiber reinforced composite material in the stage of producing the fiber reinforced Al alloy composite material contg. the carbon fibers as the reinforcing material by incorporating specific elements into the Al which is the matrix. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fibers having >=30,000kg/mm.<2> Young's modulus are incorporated at 30-70% by volume % into molten Al which is the matrix in the stage of producing a fiber reinforced composite material consisting of the carbon fibers as the reinforcing material and Al as the matrix. In this case >=1 kinds in total of 2-10% Mg, 0.05-5% Zr, 0.05-5% Ca, 0.05-5% Li, 0.01-0.2% Be, 0.05-2% Ba and 0.1-0.5% Ce which are more easily oxidizable than Al are incorporated in Al as the matrix at 0.01-10%. After such composite material is subjected to molten metal forging, the forging is subjected to a heat treatment at 400-550 deg.C and, if necessary, to an aging treatment and is then cooled down to an ordinary temp. or below. The fiber reinforced Al alloy composite material having good wettability between the molten Al alloy and the carbon fibers and excellent mechanical strength is obtd.
