PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound by reducing an aminoazo compound with hydrazine in a solvent in the presence of an iron compound and activated carbon. CONSTITUTION:The phenylenediamine compound of formula II can be prepared by reducing the aminoazo compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, alkoxy or halogen) with hydrazine in an inert organic solvent (e.g. methanol, ethanol, benzene, toluene, etc.) in the presence of an iron compound (e.g. FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4, etc.) and activated carbon. The reaction temperature is 20-200 deg.C, preferably 50-100 deg.C. The amounts of the iron compound and activated carbon are 0.01-0.5mol and 5-100g per 1mol of the compound of formula I , respectively. EFFECT:The azo group is reduced in high efficiency to give the diamine in high yield. Since the by-production of waste material can be prevented and the use of an autoclave is not necessary, the process has industrial advantages.
