Preparation of catalysts based on copper in combination with inorganic supports chosen from the oxides of metals of the group alkaline earth, lanthanide or actinide. The copper is introduced into the catalyst from a copper formate precursor. The method of preparing these contact masses consists of impregnation of the support, followed by a thermal decomposition under hydrogen. These catalysts are highly efficient in methanol synthesis, especially from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
