<p>The process consists of (a) reacting a dicarboxylic acid capable of forming lactams, with a hydroxide, oxide or carbonate, under reflux and agitation to form the corresp. acid salt; and (b) cyclising the salt with elimination of one or two molecules of water in an autoclave at 130-140 deg. C, to give salts of formula (I), in which M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, R is a 2-3C alkylene gp. and n has a value dependent on the valency of M.</p> |
