Catalyst for the hydrogenation of alkynes having a gamma alumina support carrying copper metal and optionally an activator metal. The support has a surface area of 68 to 350 m<2>/g, 50 to 90 per cent of the pores have an average diameter of 4 to 12 nm, 0.5 to 25 per cent of the pores have an average diameter of 100 to 1000 nm. The catalyst is advantageously employed for the removal of alkynes (such as 1-butyn-3-ene) from a diene (such as 1,3-butadiene) with relatively little degradation of the diene. |
