PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal compsn. containing specified five liquid crystal compds. which has a low viscosity, anisotropy with a low refractive index and a high K33/K11 ratio in elasticity constant and is useful for a matrix type TN-FEM liquid crystal display element which forms TV images with high visibility. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal compsn. contains trans-4-n-alkyl-(4-cyanophenyl)-cyclohexane of formula I (where n is 3, 5 or 7), 4-n-alkyl-trans, trans- dicyclohexyl-4'-carbonitrile of formula II (where m is 2, 3, 4 or 7), n-alkoxy-4- trans-(4-alkylcyclohexyl)-benzene of formula III (where p is 3 or 5; q is 2 or 4), 4-(trans-4-n-pentylcyclohexyl)-4'-trans-4-n-propylcyclohexylbiphenyl of formula IVand 5-n-alkyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3-dioxane of formula V (where r is 2, 3, 4 or 5).
