PURPOSE:To obtain the titled metal-coated optical fiber with a less increase in transmission loss by coating metal powder paste on an optical fiber consisting of a core and a clad provided on the periphery of the core, and calcining the paste. CONSTITUTION:Metal powder paste 5 at ordinary temp. is coated on the periphery of an optical fiber 1 which is spinned from an optical fiber base material 3 heated by a heating furnace 8 through a dip part 6 wherein the metal powder paste 5 at ordinary temp. is supplied from a dip device 4. Various kinds of paste of Ag-Pd, Ag, Cu, Ni, Al, etc. can be used for example, as the metal powder paste 5. The metal powder paste 5 coated on the optical fiber 1 is firstly precalcined in the first heating furnace 9, and then calcined in the second heating furnace 10. Consequently, Cu or Al which is the essential component of the metal powder paste 5, for example, is coated on the optical fiber 1, and cured.
