PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium for high-density recording which has excellent adhesive strength between a magnetic layer and a base, decreases the defects of the coated film and has excellent light shieldability and surface smoothness by dispersing carbon black with phospholipid having high purity as a dispersant into an intermediate layer to be provided between the base and magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The intermediate layer of a magnetic recording medium provided with a light shieldable intermediate layer and a magnetic layer on an org. transparent film base is formed by dispersing carbon black into a high polymer binder by using phospholipid consisting essentially of at least one of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcerine, inositol phosphatide and having high purity as a dispersant. The content of phospholipid is >=80%, more preferably >=90%. The amt. of the phospholipid to be added varies with the grain size and specific surface area of the carbon black to be used and the phospholipid is added preferably about 1-20pts. for each 100pts. carbon black. The dispersion of the carbon black is thus powerfully effected, the surface characteristic of the intermediate layer is improved and the satisfactory surface wettability is maintained.
