PURPOSE:To read a picture at the same time while confirming directly the read picture by using a picture projected with magnification on a screen from the picture on a microfilm so as to convert it into an electric signal. CONSTITUTION:A light projected from a lamp 3 transmits through a microfilm 7 via a lens system 8 and an image is formed on a screen 9. The image formed on the screen 9 is a magnified image of the picture of the film 7 and the magnification is changed freely by changing the distance between the film 7 and the lens 8 and the distance between the lens 8 and the screen 9. The magnified image on the screen 9 is inputted to a photoelectric converting element 11 via a lens 10 and scanned and converted into an electric signal. Only a required part in the picture is extracted by providing a masking mechanism 12 comprising a set of cut plates 13, 14 movable in the X and Y directions to the screen 9 and the part is converted into an electric signal by the element 11.
