PURPOSE:To attain color original reading with high speed and high resolution and inexpensive constitution by using a color image sensor where red, green and blue color stripe form color filters are arranged on an image sensor having the same number of photoelectric converting elements as that of monochroic image sensors, lighting sequentially three (red/green/blue) light sources in synchronizing with the scanning of the image sensors to light an original face and carrying the original at a prescribed speed. CONSTITUTION:The color image sensor 10 is constituted of dividing broadwise a photodetecting plane of a monochroic image sensor equally into three sections and arranging r (red), g (green), b (blue) stripe filters on eadh section. The original 1 is carried in high constant speed and the color image sensor 10 is scanned continuously in a three times scanning speed while the original is advanced one scanning the pitch (equal to the width of picture element). Further, original lighting light sources 6, 7, 8 are lighted sequentially intermittently in synchronizing with the scanning of the color image sensor 10.
