Novel compounds of the general Formula III are prepared by reacting the corresponding dialkyl malonate with diketene and treating the resulting intermediate with an alkali metal alcoholate and with iodine or bromine, or with a mixture of bromine and an alkali metal thiocyanate. The symbols in Formula I have the meaning given in Claim 1. The novel alpha -acetylazetidinone derivatives of the above general formula which contain a protective group in place of R can be used as starting compounds for preparing thienamycin, while the corresponding alpha -acetylazetidinone derivatives which contain an optionally substituted phenyl group in place of R demonstrate useful pharmacological properties, in particular antihypoxic effects. <IMAGE>
